Who is Yayoi Kusama?

Yayoi Kusama is a 92-year-old Japanese contemporary artist who specializes in multiple art forms including sculpture, installation, painting, performance, video art, and fashion. Her work is based on conceptual art, with attributions to minimalism and surrealism. Her studio is located inside of a psychiatric hospital in Tokyo, Japan.

Kusama is known for her openness regarding mental health and illness. She uses artwork as a way of expression as well as a coping mechanism in relation to her mental illnesses. Infinity Net is one particular art piece that she claims helps her psychologically develop this "safety net" to prevent her from falling into an abyss, which can be assumed to be her mental illness.

Kusama has continued to create arguably her most famous series of artwork- Mirror/Infinity Rooms since 1963. These artworks consist of complex mirror installations combined with lighting effects to create the illusion of a never-ending void.
